At Cantello Tayler Recruitment, one of the top things we need to discuss with candidates is their location of work. Are they happy to work in an office full time? Are they open to hybrid working? Do they want a fully remote job? The most common response by far is that someone would ideally be looking for a hybrid role. We ran a poll on our LinkedIn platform recently, asking ‘Which working model do you prefer and/or think works best?’ and the results showed that 57% of all votes said hybrid, with only 9% of the vote thinking a full office-based working model works best. Please see the full results below.
With a strong preference being for hybrid working for the vast majority, we wanted to explore why candidates would feel this way.
Why hybrid working is the preference for staff: A recruitment agency’s perspective
In recent years, the traditional workplace has undergone a significant transformation. The global shift towards remote work during the pandemic brought about a new understanding of work-life balance, flexibility, and productivity. As we emerge from that period, one working model has stood out as the preference for many professionals: hybrid working. Hybrid working is now a key consideration for candidates when choosing employers.
But why exactly is hybrid working so attractive to staff? As a recruitment agency, we have observed several compelling reasons behind this growing preference. Let’s explore the benefits and why your business should take notice.
- Flexibility is no longer a ‘perk’, it’s an expectation
With the Labour Government pushing for flexible working as a day one right, gone are the days when flexible working arrangements were considered an added perk. The government has linked flexibility to better performance and a more productive, loyal workforce. Today, employees expect a level of flexibility that allows them to manage both personal and professional responsibilities without sacrificing one for the other. Hybrid working offers the best of both worlds – the structure of office work combined with the autonomy of remote work. From parents needing to balance childcare to professionals pursuing further education or personal interests, hybrid working empowers employees to make a schedule that works for them. This flexibility leads to a happier workforce, and a happy workforce is a productive one.
- Improved work-life balance
The traditional 9-to-5 office model often blurs the line between work and personal life. Commuting, rigid schedules, and lack of autonomy can lead to burnout. Hybrid working allows employees to regain control over their time, leading to a healthier balance between work and life. Whether it’s being able to start the day without a stressful commute or the ability to attend personal appointments during the workday, hybrid work gives employees more space to breathe.
This improved work-life balance is one of the top reasons candidates are seeking hybrid roles. It helps reduce stress, increases job satisfaction, and fosters greater loyalty to employers who offer such flexibility.
- Increased productivity and focus
It’s a common misconception that employees working remotely are less productive. In fact, many have found that being away from the office can help minimise distractions and improve focus. Hybrid working allows employees to dedicate certain days for deep, uninterrupted work at home, while reserving office days for meetings, collaboration, and brainstorming sessions, as well as social interaction with colleagues. This flexibility means employees can work when and where they are most productive, and choosing how to work often results in better outcomes for both the employee and the employer.
- Cost savings for both employees and employers
From the employee’s perspective, hybrid working can significantly reduce expenses associated with commuting, buying lunch, and even work attire. For employers, offering a hybrid model can lower overhead costs. Smaller office spaces, reduced utility bills, and less expenditure on on-site amenities like catering and transportation can lead to considerable savings. Moreover, with the ability to attract talent from a wider geographical area, companies no longer need to limit their talent pool to a specific location, leading to more diverse and highly skilled employees.
- Attracting and retaining talent
In the current job market, top candidates are prioritising flexibility and work-life balance. Offering a hybrid work model is not just about retaining your current employees, but also attracting the best candidates available. By adopting hybrid working, your business sends a clear message that it values the well-being and preferences of its staff. This can boost employee morale and reduce turnover, ensuring your organisation remains competitive in the battle for top talent.
- A sense of autonomy and trust
Hybrid working fosters a sense of trust between employers and employees. When given the freedom to choose how and where they work, employees feel empowered. This autonomy can lead to a more motivated and engaged workforce, with staff taking ownership of their tasks and responsibilities. Additionally, hybrid work can build a culture of accountability. With a results-driven focus, employees are judged on the quality of their output rather than hours spent at their desks, encouraging higher levels of performance.
Conclusion
Hybrid working is a working model that meets the needs of today’s workforce, offering the flexibility, balance, and autonomy that employees crave. By incorporating hybrid working into your business model, you not only align with employee preferences but also position your company as a forward-thinking, desirable employer. There is certainly a complex debate around remote working, and it is clear that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The key will be to balance productivity, collaboration, and employee satisfaction so that you achieve the best results for your and their needs.
