No matter what you are studying or what industry you are in, there is a future for you in technology. But which IT jobs are in demand? With the tech industry booming, there are jobs in IT all over the UK (and beyond). From development to IT support, here is our guide to the top tech jobs in high demand.
IT Business Analyst
Business analysts are a vital part of any IT team. They are the ones who work out what the future needs of the business are and make sure that the current tech fits them, including computer systems and cloud computing. They help organisations achieve their goals by analysing data, assessing processes and systems, creating solutions and planning for the future.
Qualifications: Competition for business analyst positions is high, so having a degree in a relevant subject will be a distinct advantage.
Additional: Business analyst roles exist on a permanent basis, but you could also work on a freelance or contract basis for organisations once you have gained some experience.
IT Project Manager
Project managers make sure that not only the tech is working, but they also take care of business strategy coordinating projects, from inception to delivery; managing people, resources and budget to achieve a desired outcome.
Qualifications: Studying towards a degree in business or project management, foundation degree or HND will provide practical knowledge. From a support role, it is possible to undertake professional qualifications to progress into project management.
Additional: Project managers work in both public and private organisations, across a range of sectors, including architecture, engineering manufacturing as well as IT, so your skills will be interchangeable.
IT Network Engineer
There is a lot more to a network engineer‘s job than just fixing problems. It is more about planning and configuring, which means it will suit anyone who enjoys scheduling and working out how to keep systems running. It can be a complex job, so you will need to have constant training to succeed.
Qualifications: It may be possible to enter this career without a degree, provided you have significant experience. Degrees in computer science, software, engineering, systems, networks or electronic/electrical engineering will be advantageous.
Additional: Your career path will generally depend on the size of the organisation you work for and the scope of its IT systems. In the right company, you can progress to senior network manager and network management positions.
IT Software Engineer
Software engineering involves working in a constantly evolving environment, due to technological advances and the strategic direction of the software development required by the organisation you work for. You will create, maintain, improve and audit systems to meet particular needs, testing both hard and software systems to diagnose and resolve system faults.
Qualifications: Larger graduate recruiters will only employ graduates with proven technical skills and a good degree in a computing-related discipline. A good knowledge of programming languages will be essential in this role.
Additional: Women are currently underrepresented in this profession and gender imbalance across the IT industry as a whole is a recognised issue. Steps are being taken to redress the balance.

IT Security Analyst
As well as protecting computer networks from attacks, network security engineers also deal with information security and other cyber risks. Security analysts are responsible for designing and implementing information security strategies and policies, not just in tech companies, but all different types of companies.
Qualifications: A background in IT security or network security and strong technical knowledge is essential.
Additional: Job titles for this role vary and may include information security architect, information security consultant, security operations centre (SOC) analyst, network security engineer and cyber intelligence analyst.
IT Data Scientist
In this role, you will analyse and interpret large amounts of data from a range of sources, using algorithmic, artificial intelligence, data mining, machine learning and statistical tools, in order to make it accessible to businesses. Once the date has been interpreted, you will present your results using clear and engaging language.
Qualifications: Applicants will typically need a degree in a computer science, mathematical or science-based subject. Plus, you will be expected to know some programming languages such as R, SQL, Python, C or Java and have strong database design and coding skills.
Additional: This is a collaborative area, with many people sharing their data science insights and methodologies, so you should be prepared to share your ideas and solutions with a wider team.
IT Machine Learning Engineers
Machine learning engineers work on artificial intelligence, being responsible for creating algorithms and programmes that enable machines to take actions without being directed. A key feature of this work is to provide computers with the ability to learn automatically and improve from experience, without being programmed.
Qualifications: Most employers look for a master’s degree, or a PhD in a relevant discipline. Even though it is a rapidly expanding job role, there are not many courses focusing solely on the subject as yet.
Additional: While a career in machine learning engineering is relatively new, it is proving popular, and engineers are in high demand.
