In the UK, employers are allowed to ask, but you’re under no obligation to tell them. You could share it if you’re happy to, talk about your expectations instead, or bring the conversation back to your skills and experience. What we’d steer clear of is quoting a made-up figure, as the risks can far outweigh the reward.

The best preparation? Know the going rate for the role and be ready to talk about what you’ll bring to the team.
